Picture
I covered Mothman for Weird Renown and I am super interested in attending Mothmania and seeing first hand some of the awesome costumes and festivities that these people put on every year to celebrate this cryptid. In particular, I wanna try that Mothman pizza.

Ohio State Reformatory

Picture
Formerly known as the Mansfield Reformatory, this historic prison is the site where the state's most violent ghosts can be found. Spirits of rioting inmates who often fought each other to the death in overcrowded isolation cells haunt the halls and cells of this former prison.

Hell Town, Ohio

Picture
The people of the former town of Boston Mills were mysteriously order by the US government to leave the town in the early 70s. Whether Satanic activity, government conspiracy or mutated citizens lead to the town's sudden evacuation, the abandoned homes, buildings and streets are said to be haunted today by the spirits of those who didn't want to leave.

Parts of Ohio's canal built in the early 1800s can be found throughout this park, and two canal locks in particular are said to be haunted by ghosts of canal workers who died on the job.

Picture
The abandoned town of Moonville in southeastern Ohio holds a haunted tunnel, where legend has it the ghost of a man who was killed instantly by a train passing through the tunnel wanders along the track bed near the old tunnel at night.

Majestic Theatre

Picture
America's oldest continuously operating theater—built in 1853 and bound to have a haunting or two—can be found in Chillicothe. What was once the Masonic Opera House is now a normal, fully functioning theater —with the exception of a ghostly little girl, mysterious fogs and a voice asking for someone named Andrew.

Bob Mackey's Music World

Picture

  • Wilder, Kentucky
  • the most haunted nightclub and bar in the country. The building was originally a slaughterhouse, which of course lends to its spookiness.
  • There are quite a few ghost stories and hauntings associated with Mammoth Cave, but you'll have to be brave enough to head underground to discover them. They are more than 4,000 years old, so you never know what you may find.

Sleepy Hollow Road/Devil’s Point — Prospect, KY

Picture
Kentucky’s own “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” takes place on Sleepy Hollow Road. If you find yourself driving late at night, headlights are your only friend and source of light on this winding road. The story goes that a dark hearse will speed up behind you, too close for comfort, and make you so nervous you lose sight of the turns and crash. But if that’s not enough to scare you, take Sleepy Hollow down a little further and you’ll find Devil’s Point — a site known for satanic rituals and sacrifices, haunting chants and bonfires with people dressed in black robes.

Lima Tuberculosis Hospital

Picture
Hidden behind a small neighborhood on Lima's far west side, sits this abandoned TB ward, where the ghosts of patients wander the halls and hospital grounds.

Grandview Cemetery

Picture
  • Elizabethtown, KY
  • also known as the Gates of Hell, houses the graves of those who died in the 1700s ad 1800s. Over the years, many unusual things have happened here, including large balls of glowing green light, shadowy figures, and disembodied screams. You may not want to turn your car off when you come here. Some have reported car trouble while visiting!

LIBERTY HALL, FRANKFORT

Picture
John Brown was one of Kentucky's first senators and, in 1796, he built a family home in Frankfort. Many people have lived and died in the home, from slaves to relatives. Today there are said to be three primary spirits that exist in a state of unrest. The first and most famous is Ms. Margaret Varick, aka the Gray Lady. She is said to have traveled around 800 miles to attend the funeral of a family member, only to succumb to a heart attack after her journey. Initially buried in the garden, rumors say her body was later moved. Now her restless spirit is said to wander the grounds, opening doors, closing doors, and always wearing gray. A Spanish opera performer visited and disappeared mysteriously from the mansion in 1805. His spirit is also said to roam the property, along with a figure wearing a soldier's uniform. The young lad is reported to gaze into a ground-level window with a forlorn, love-struck expression.

Squire's Castle

Picture
While certainly charming in the daylight, this small castle within Cleveland Metroparks is haunted nightly by a shadowy figure with a red lantern.

The Seelbach Hotel — Louisville, KY

Picture
“The Lady in Blue,” widely agreed to be Mrs. Patricia Wilson, still roams the halls looking for her husband who never made it to the Seelbach Hotel. The legend goes, they’d gone through a rough patch in their marriage and were taking a vacation to rekindle the romance. Unfortunately, Mr. Wilson died in a car accident on the way to the hotel. Not long after, Mrs. Wilson’s body was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft at the hotel. Whether it was a tragic accident or a suicide is still unknown

Places to visit Just-Because

New Orleans, LA

Papa Bucks BBQ, Marietta, GA

Zach and I visited New Orleans for the day in 2019 before boarding for our cruise to Progresso. I completely fell in love with it and have since become extremely interested in their culture, and I am dying to go back so I can explore this wonderful place more thoroughly.
I want to visit Papa Bucks BBQ because to participate in a eating contest is on my bucket list and I want to beat the Pigzilla Challenge. The Pigzilla is three pounds of pulled pork and barbecue sauce on a one-pound Hawaiian sweet bread roll that has to be eaten in 45 minutes. You have to keep it down 5 minutes without puking.
